The Piment d’Espelette is a cherished chilli pepper from the Basque region of France, renowned for its mild heat and distinctive flavour. Maturing to a vibrant red, these peppers are traditionally dried and ground into a fine powder, offering a sweet, fruity taste with subtle smoky undertones. With a Scoville rating of up to 4,000 SHU, they provide a gentle warmth, enhancing dishes without overwhelming heat. Integral to Basque cuisine, Piment d’Espelette is used in a variety of dishes, including the classic piperade. This Capsicum annuum variety thrives in the unique climate of Espelette, where it’s harvested in late summer and celebrated annually during the Espelette Pepper Festival.

  • Species: Capsicum annuum
  • Scoville (SHU): Up to 4,000
  • Origin: Espelette, France
  • Time to Fruit: Late summer harvest
  • Culinary Uses: Seasoning for meats, stews, sauces; key ingredient in piperade

Seeds Quality

Every seed we sell is grown at the ChilliChump homestead, so we control the whole process from sowing to harvest. Seeds are handpicked from healthy plants, processed using methods we’ve refined over the years, and germination-tested before they reach you.

Unless a listing says otherwise, every variety we sell is a stable line (F7+), so it breeds true season after season and won’t throw unexpected traits on its own. That leaves one thing to manage: cross-pollination, where stray pollen reaches a flower on an insect or a gust of wind while it’s in bloom. We take more care over isolation than most, which keeps the risk small, but no outdoor grower can rule it out entirely, so we don’t claim 100% purity. The only way to TRULY isolate chilli varieties is to grow just one variety within a quarter-mile to a mile radius from any other chilli pepper variety.

You can read what other growers think in our reviews, and the ChilliChump YouTube channel follows these plants through every season, so you can see exactly where your seeds come from. If you’re ever unhappy with seeds from us, please get in touch.
