The Golden Nugget is a captivating chilli variety renowned for its ornamental appeal and medium heat, measuring approximately 30,000 to 50,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). This particular version is one I have been selectively breeding for more extreme variegation resulting in a stunning plant.
The Golden Nugget chilli is a compact Capsicum annuum variety, originally developed by Martha Perry in Michigan. This striking plant is prized for its variegated foliage and colourful pods that ripen from deep purple to golden yellow or orange, often streaked with red or purple. Depending on the pot size it grows 30–80 cm tall. It’s ideal for pots and small spaces.
Its small, elongated pods, up to 3 cm in diameter, transition from green with purple hues to a vibrant golden yellow upon ripening, often displaying red streaks. The plant’s variegated foliage—featuring shades of white, green, and occasional purple or pink—adds to its visual charm. It thrives in pots, with a maturation period of approximately 80 to 90 days.

Every seed we sell is grown at the ChilliChump homestead, so we control the whole process from sowing to harvest. Seeds are handpicked from healthy plants, processed using methods we’ve refined over the years, and germination-tested before they reach you.
Keeping our seed true to type is something we work hard at. The only way to truly isolate a chilli variety, though, is to grow it with no other chilli plant within a quarter of a mile to a mile, and no grower with a collection can do that. So we don’t claim 100% purity. The chance of a stray cross is small. If something grows out differently to what you expected, please get in touch. We’d rather hear about it than not.

Occasionally seeds produce something that is not “true to type”, or you may have less than satisfactory germination rates. If this happens please get in contact and let us know the details.
