The Golden Nugget is a captivating chilli variety renowned for its ornamental appeal and medium heat, measuring approximately 30,000 to 50,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). This particular version is one I have been selectively breeding for more extreme variegation resulting in a stunning plant.
Its small, elongated pods, up to 3 cm in diameter, transition from green with purple hues to a vibrant golden yellow upon ripening, often displaying red streaks. The plant’s variegated foliage—featuring shades of white, green, and occasional purple or pink—adds to its visual charm. As a member of the Capsicum annuum species, the Golden Nugget originates from North America and typically reaches about 80 cm in height. It thrives in pots or directly in the ground, with a maturation period of approximately 80 to 90 days. Culinarily, its thin-walled fruits offer a sweet, fruity flavour with subtle earthy undertones, making them ideal for salads, pickling, or adding a splash of colour to various dishes.
